4 Square
Project Overview
The Four Square rollout began with stores in St Heliers and Onetangi on Waiheke Island, as part of a wider vision to refresh and modernise the iconic Four Square experience.
Foodstuffs approached RCG Architects to develop a new retail model that could provide a pathway for the future of 189 Four Square stores across the North Island. The concept celebrates the familiarity and nostalgia of the brand while introducing a more contemporary, elevated approach to convenience retail.
At St Heliers, a bold palette of black finishes, warm timber and integrated lighting creates a modern backdrop, with flooring playing an important role in bringing the Four Square identity into the space.
Forbo Eternal Original in a vibrant red was used through key areas of the store, referencing Four Square’s distinctive brand colours and creating a strong contrast against the darker interior. Beyond its visual impact, Eternal is a durable, easy-to-maintain commercial vinyl well suited to the demands of a busy retail environment.
Forbo Safestep R12 in Charcoal was used through the supermarket aisles, complementing the red while providing enhanced slip resistance in areas where spills are more likely to occur.
Together, the flooring helps define different zones, guide customers through the store and reinforce the brand through colour. The result is a fresh and inviting take on the traditional Four Square, balancing its familiar identity with a distinctly modern retail experience.
