Te Puia Cultural Centre Rotorua
Project Overview
The flooring brief for the Te Puia Cultural Centre called for a solution that would do more than simply provide a practical surface. It needed to contribute meaningfully to the interior experience, enhancing the strong expression of Māori culture and identity at the heart of Te Puia.
For the retail space, designer Douglas set out to transform the floor into a defining design feature. Drawing inspiration from the intricate geometry, repetition and visual rhythm of traditional Māori tukutuku panels, the flooring concept translates these qualities into a bold, large-scale pattern that extends across the space.
Interface modular carpet tiles provided an ideal medium for bringing this concept to life. By combining a considered palette of tile colours with the flexibility of a modular format, individual tiles could be composed almost like building blocks, allowing colour, contrast, orientation and repetition to work together as part of a much larger pattern. Rather than reading as individual carpet tiles, the modules collectively form a cohesive floor plane with a strong graphic identity.
The modular approach also allowed the design to respond to the scale and architecture of the retail environment. The pattern creates movement and visual interest across the floor while helping to define the space, demonstrating how modular flooring can move beyond a conventional installation to become an integral part of the overall design narrative.
Alongside this creative flexibility, Interface carpet tiles offer the practical advantages of modular flooring, including the ability to selectively replace individual tiles when required, greater flexibility for future changes to the space, and the potential to minimise unnecessary material replacement over the life of the installation.
The finished floor has become an important part of the character of the retail centre, with its tukutuku-inspired geometry creating a distinctive connection between material, pattern and place. The result is a memorable interior that supports the wider cultural experience of Te Puia and demonstrates the potential of modular flooring as a genuine design tool.
