Project Overview

Te Rangihīroa College, the University of Otago’s newest six-storey residential hall, represents a pinnacle of modern design, cultural homage, and sustainable student living. This state-of-the-art facility is the university’s first purpose-built residential college in over 50 years, named in honor of distinguished alumnus Te Rangihīroa (Sir Peter Buck). Designed to accommodate 450 students, the college provides a dynamic, supportive, and vibrant living environment.

The college’s design is deeply rooted in cultural significance, incorporating input from Te Rangihīroa’s iwi, Ngāti Mutunga, and local mana whenua, Kāi Tahu. The building’s exterior features whakataukī (proverbs) that inspire resilience and perseverance, while the interior color palette, inspired by Manawa Whenua (the bubbling spring rising from water to land to sky), transitions from green on the lower floors to blue on the upper floors, symbolizing growth and elevation.

Central to this design narrative is the innovative use of flooring, which enhances both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the space. In Mahi Tamariki, the college’s open-plan recreational area, Interface’s Open Air in Charcoal and Iron provides a robust and stylish foundation. Zones of Syncopation in Maritime blue and Composure Colours in custom green are strategically used to define casual breakout areas, creating serene environments for relaxation and delineating functional zones like the kitchen and dining areas. This thoughtful use of flooring not only enhances the ambiance but also supports various activities and gatherings, making these spaces both inviting and practical for social interaction and leisure.

The tutorial spaces are designed to foster a focused learning atmosphere, featuring a patchwork of Interface’s Open Air collection in Charcoal, Iron, and a custom blue that aligns with the University’s brand identity. Forbo’s Surestep night (blue speckled vinyl) complements this with its durability and slip resistance, making it ideal for high-traffic educational areas.

Dorm rooms and corridors are adorned with Composure Neutrals in Fortitude, offering a calming and homely environment that supports restful living. Forbo’s Safestep and Surestep safety vinyl collections are used in bathrooms and wet areas, providing superior slip resistance and prioritizing resident safety. These products are particularly suited for the college’s high-traffic and moisture-prone areas, ensuring durability and ease of maintenance.

As a five Green Star building, Te Rangihīroa College underscores the University of Otago’s commitment to sustainability. Interface’s flooring products, known for their high recycled content and Cradle to Cradle certification, enhance indoor air quality and help reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Forbo’s flooring solutions minimize waste and ensure safety through the use of natural and renewable materials, requiring minimal maintenance and contributing to a healthier indoor environment.

Te Rangihīroa College is more than just a residence; it is a thoughtfully designed space that celebrates cultural heritage, promotes sustainability, and fosters a vibrant community. The innovative use of flooring throughout the building not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also ensures functionality, safety, and comfort for all residents. By integrating these elements, Te Rangihīroa College sets a new standard for university residential living, providing students with an inspiring and supportive environment to thrive both academically and personally.
