Ōrewa Library
Project Overview
The design of the Orewa Library reflects a deep connection to its coastal setting and surrounding natural environment. Inspired by the fluid forms of the nearby ocean, DLM Architects introduced gentle curves and soft lines throughout the building to evoke the movement of waves. This organic design language fosters a calming atmosphere that resonates with the library’s coastal identity and invites community engagement.
Flooring was integral to the interior experience, both functionally and visually. Over 1000m² of Interface’s Aerial Flying Colours Collection was installed across the library’s two levels, demonstrating a commitment to material quality and design continuity. The Aerial provides a flowing linear pattern that provides gentle movement through the library. A carefully curated mix of colours, including Granite, Griege, Iron, Granite/Azure, Aquamarine, Azure, Grass, and Magenta adds depth, energy, and wayfinding cues without relying on walls or physical barriers.
As part of Interface’s i2 product family, the Aerial Flying Colours Collection is designed with intentional colour and pattern variation, tiles can be installed in any order without the concern of dye lot matching, future proofing this public building. The modular format also allows for design flexibility, enabling subtle zoning and visual rhythm across the interior. Engineered for durability, acoustic comfort, and commercial performance, these Interface carpet tiles deliver a high-performance flooring solution, ideal for public environments like libraries.
The variation in texture not only supports a more intuitive spatial layout but also enhances acoustic comfort and visual interest throughout the interior. These tiles contribute to the library’s identity as a dynamic, adaptable public space while maintaining a cohesive and sophisticated palette.
Flooring is an investment, to protect this striking new floor, Interface’s entrance matting solution, Step Repeat SR999 was used at all entry and exit points of the building. This though, 50cmx50cm format entrance solution matches up perfectly with Interface carpet tiles. SR999 includes a thicker nylon ‘scrubber’ yarn which removes dirt and debris from feet, footwear and wheels as they come into the building before it gets to the carpet tiles.
For hard flooring areas, Forbo’s homogeneous vinyl from the Energetic range in colour 52215 Shimmer Ebony, was selected for its performance and visual contrast. Shimmer Ebony features angular chips that create a terrazzo-inspired appearance, providing excellent dirt-hiding properties for high-traffic areas. The flooring’s construction ensures colour and pattern are consistent throughout the thickness, enhancing durability over time. Its design offers a balance of visual energy and function, with the Shimmer variant delivering a modern aesthetic that adds depth and movement to the floor plate. This makes it an ideal complement to the more neutral and natural tones used elsewhere in the scheme, reinforcing the library’s overall design language of calm elegance with subtle dynamism.
Natural light fills the building with generous sized windows in thoughtfully placed to maximize daylight and reduce the reliance on artificial lighting. These openings also frame views of the urban surrounding, reinforcing the library’s openness and connection to the community. Externally, the library is finished in a palette of neutral tones that allow it to blend harmoniously with surrounding buildings. This design approach ensures the library remains an elegant and enduring feature within the community for years to come.
