Te Toka Tū Moana – Northcote College
Project Overview
A landmark moment in Northcote College’s 150-year history has taken shape with the completion of Te Toka Tū Moana, a four-storey specialist learning block designed by Ignite Architects and opened in January 2026. The building’s name, gifted by Kaumātua Rev. John Marsden, means “the rock that stands in the ocean” and carries with it a sense of purpose that runs through every aspect of the project, strength, leadership, and stability for the generations of students it is built to serve.
Housing 33 specialist teaching spaces across nine departments, the building brings together science labs, commercial kitchens, digital fabrication rooms, art and fashion studios, and a library with an integrated learning support centre under one roof. Stepped into the sloping site, the form minimises its footprint while opening up views across Kauri Glen Reserve to Rangitoto Island. A Kauri seed-inspired frit façade strengthens the building’s connection to place while contributing to shading and thermal performance. Designed to support roll growth toward 1,600 students, the building prioritises inclusivity and adaptability throughout, with universal accessibility and flexible planning at its core.
Flooring across the building was selected with longevity and low maintenance firmly in mind. Forbo’s Composure carpet tiles, in the warm sage tones of Eucalyptus alongside the grounded neutrals Intrepid, Resolute, and Fortitude, bring comfort and acoustic softness to classrooms and library spaces. In higher-traffic and hard-wearing areas, Forbo’s Marmoleum Real and Marmoleum Fresco offer a resilient, natural surface in a palette of slate, sage, and soft blues that feels considered rather than purely functional. Where safety underfoot matters most, Safestep R12 provides dependable slip resistance in wet and kitchen environments.
The specification of carpet tiles also reflects a practical wisdom well-suited to a busy secondary school. Should a section become damaged, individual tiles can be replaced without disturbing the wider floor, protecting the school’s investment well into the future.
Together, these material choices create a foundation that is as hardworking as the building itself, quiet, enduring, and ready for generations of student life.
