Harbour Hospice North Shore

Project Overview
The recent refurbishment of Harbour Hospice North Shore marks more than just a physical upgrade. It is a reimagining of how palliative care environments can support dignity, comfort, and connection at every level. The project focused on creating spaces that feel human, safe, and grounded in nature, with an emphasis on warmth, cultural sensitivity, and long-term functionality.
The design intent centred on providing comfort and healing through natural materials and a homely, welcoming atmosphere. The overall design inspired by the Kowhai flower, a key symbol in the hospice’s brand, brought soft injections of yellow to the interiors, adding a sense of identity and cultural meaning. Sunlight, garden views, and tactile surfaces were all key drivers behind the reconfiguration of spaces, which aimed to balance emotional and physical care.
Communal areas were reshaped to foster connection and conversation, while clinical and administrative zones were streamlined for ease of use. The result is a facility that not only delivers services but reflects a philosophy that values quality of life, even when health challenges become more complex.
Flooring was integral to achieving this vision. Interface’s World Woven collection was chosen for its ability to deliver warmth and texture while meeting healthcare-grade standards. “The World Woven Collection allowed us to custom colour the WW890 range to offer a point of difference which added design flair and gave the illusion of broadloom carpet providing that domestic feel with a contemporary and modern approach,” says Spatial Designer Neesha Morar.
The flooring needed to support a wide range of users including patients, staff, whānau, volunteers, and community visitors. Durability and low-maintenance performance were key, along with sustainability. The selection of environmentally conscious materials aligned with the hospice’s ethos of care. The WW870, WW890 and WW895 ranges from the World Woven Collection allowed for gentle tonal shifts across spaces, creating a visual language that is calm and cohesive.
Colours used in the carpet formed the foundation for wall finishes and furnishings, bringing consistency and a soft vibrancy into the design. This approach also helped support intuitive navigation, especially for patients with low vision or cognitive impairments.
The flooring met strict Infection Protection Control requirements and was chosen to withstand rigorous commercial cleaning protocols. Although budget was a challenge, the team made the decision not to compromise. “We needed flooring that was easy to maintain but was fit for commercial use and could withstand clinical cleaning standards,” explains Morar. The use of pattern and texture also helped to mask day-to-day spills and wear, preserving the dignity and calm of the environment.
Since opening in 2023, the newly named Kārohirohi has already made a meaningful impact. Patients and families have responded positively to the refreshed spaces. One hospice team member shared, “It has been wonderful to welcome patients and their families and whānau into our new fit-for-purpose facility. Many have shared how appreciative they are of being able to stay overnight in the beautiful new whānau space and bedrooms.”
The flooring continues to support the functionality of the space, from smooth transitions for mobility aids to enhanced acoustics that contribute to a peaceful atmosphere. The zoning supports retreat when needed while maintaining ease of movement for staff and patients alike.
The Harbour Hospice North Shore refurbishment has delivered far more than upgraded interiors. It has created a place that reflects compassion, care, and connection. More than a healthcare facility, it now stands as a place of memory, meaning, and mana. A tangible example of how design can support people at every stage of life by affirming their right to live well, fully, and with dignity. This transformative project was honoured as the 2025 Interior Awards Community Impact winner, recognising its deep and lasting contribution to the lives of those it serves.
