Auckland Radiation Oncology

The North Shore facility for Auckland Radiation Oncology (ARO) exemplifies a thoughtfully designed healthcare environment, where comfort, functionality, and patient experience intersect. Opened in August 2025, the purpose-built centre significantly expands cancer treatment services in Auckland, bringing state-of-the-art radiation therapy closer to patients in North and West Auckland and Northland. The design deliberately moves away from the typical sterile appearance of clinical spaces, creating an environment that balances operational efficiency with a calming atmosphere to help reduce patient anxiety and support a more positive treatment experience. Every detail, from layout to materials, has been carefully considered to create a space that feels welcoming and supportive for both patients and staff.

Flooring plays a central role in defining the clinic’s different areas. Interface carpet tile collections, Third Space 304 in Oat and  Etched & Threaded E611 in Quartz are laid side by side, framing the entrance and waiting area and extending down the main hallway. Both collections are constructed on GlasBac backing, Interface’s proven carpet tile backing that has set the industry benchmark for performance for over two decades. GlasBac is a high-quality backing with a low carbon footprint.

Made from 100% recycled content, solution-dyed nylon, brings a plush, residential feel to the spaces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere while being easy to clean and maintain. Etched & Threaded features a bold, highly textured surface that mimics polished pebbles, introducing a subtle reference to nature and providing a calming, grounding effect for patients. The similar yarn colours of the two collections allow them to sit harmoniously alongside each other, creating a seamless transition between spaces while maintaining acoustic performance and comfort. The edge border was used to help break up the space and as a rug insert in the reception and waiting areas, adding definition and layering to the design.

The high durability and resilience of these carpet tiles make them well-suited to a busy clinic environment. With ARO’s other centres treating 70–100 patients daily, the flooring is designed to withstand heavy use while maintaining comfort, appearance, and acoustic performance, setting this new clinic up for success.

Forbo Surestep Star safety vinyl, in colour Concrete is used throughout accessible bathrooms, providing a clean, contemporary look with excellent non-slip performance. Its muted design incorporates transparent slip-resistant Step Crystals, giving the floor a subtle brightness while maintaining sophistication. Its durability, ease of maintenance, and safety features make it ideal for high-traffic zones where hygiene and slip resistance are essential.

Together, these flooring selections combine functionality, comfort, and durability, creating a cohesive environment suited to the demands of a modern healthcare facility.
