
Light Reflectance Values
Introduction
Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is the total quantity of visible light reflected by a surface.
The LRV scale runs from 0, which is a perfectly absorbing surface that could be assumed to be totally black, up to 100, which is a perfectly reflective surface that could be considered the perfect white. Because of practical influences in any application, black is always greater than 0 and white never equals 100. Additional to colour, the structure and gloss of the product or surface are determining factors for LRV.
LRVs influence a users comfort level within a space, there has been a few studies on LRVs influence on people with Dementia and also those that are Neurodiverse. As awareness and understanding increases on the influence light has on the brain, we are seeing an increase in conscious colour consideration based on LRVs across all segments.
When considering the Building Performance factor in relation to Light Reflectance Values (LRVs), the balance lies between a building’s energy efficiency and its ongoing operational requirements. Higher LRV floor coverings, often in lighter colours, can enhance brightness and reduce the need for artificial lighting, contributing to lower energy consumption. However, these lighter tones typically require more frequent cleaning, increasing maintenance time and costs. Conversely, darker floor coverings may conceal dirt more effectively and reduce cleaning demands, but can necessitate increased lighting to maintain adequate illumination levels, impacting energy use. This trade-off means that while energy efficiency ratings may favour higher LRV floor coverings, the overall building performance must be weighed against the practicalities and expenses of cleaning and maintenance regimes.
