Installation: Westpac - The Hub, Christchurch
Installer & Flooring Designer: John Jenners, Dominion Flooring
Product: Patchwork Quilt
Wow what a brief. The Christchurch earthquakes have destroyed significant commercial infrastructure. Many businesses are working from homes, warehouses and wherever a roof and 4 walls exist from which you can work from.
The Westpac Commercial Team put out a SOS call to head office saying these businesses need a place to meet, a place to work from and a place to undertake seminars. From this the 'Westpac HUB' concept developed. A large 2,500m2 'tent' that was furnished, connected and very importantly earthquake proof with a 3 to 5 year life. However calling it a 'tent' is definitely understating what a fantastic community and commercial facility it is. It is impressive. And this impressiveness has a lot to do with the great work of John Jenners and his flooring installation team.
INZIDE Commercial put the word out to Interface in Australia for some help. INZIDE had done patch work quilts before from left over stock but never for this volume. Interface gifted the end runs of the lines free of charge which INZIDE shipped over free of charge. We then added the many small batches of product we had in our warehouse and the quantities of carpet tile that Westpac had purchased previously from earlier branch designs and the magic number of 2,500m2 was achieved. Now we simply needed to get it on the floor resembling some rhyme and reason. And this was where John Jenner and his crew did an amazing job of co-ordinating colour and pattern to create an awesome space. Look at these photos - awesome, simply awesome.
2,500m2 of carpet tile was supplied to Christchurch for absolutely nothing. Kiwi ingenuity at its best.
