Landcare Research has sustainability as its guiding principle in all its building activities. This state of the art building using natural thermal control, environmentally friendly building materials and low impact building techniques was constructed in 2002.

It was and remains a cutting edge example of eco-friendly building which the NZ Green Building Council is now certifying as the way to build.

For flooring they opted for a patchwork quilt as at this time it was one of the most environmentally friendly options and was a guaranteed prevention of tile ending up in landfill. The visual nature of the patchwork was also a visual representation of their sustainability principles and guaranteed feedback from people walking through the facility and thus an opportunity to discuss sustainability practices.

The patch work was made up of pre-existing tile that InterfaceNZ was able to take back and re-use for Landcare.
